I got to design the campaign material for Joris Kouwenberg, to become a youth representative in the UN for biodiversity and food.
He came with the clear vision that he wanted to have a wave on the poster. This fit well because of his slogan "You Turn the Tide!" but also because he has studied Marine Sciences and has a great connection with the sea. I used the slogan quite literal and came up with the idea to turn the wave upside down. This created a nice visual effect that didn't feel overused (because of the iconic The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai) With his message he really wanted to make it clear that he wants to involve everyone and listen to the people. To emphasize this, I used the tail of the wave almost like an arrow, highlighting the 'You'.
To get as many votes as possible it was of course important to make attractive visuals. Moving images are a great way to do that, so I made the poster into a gif as well. This worked really well as an ending for all the campaign videos. Joris added some sound effects himself that made it come to life even more.
Instead of flyers we decided to hand out stickers. This felt more effective because it's more attractive to young people. We were struggling a little bit with wanting to make it just a cool sticker that you would want to stick on your computer or something, but of course it also had to stimulate people to vote. But eventually we found the right balance. (And it worked because he won the election!)
At first the designs were more like typical political campaign posters. But we figured since this isn't a very well known thing and people aren't in the "election mindset", it was more important to make it visually very attractive and eye-catching and show more of Joris' personality. In his speech he talked about watching sunsets with friends, so we decided to add a sunset to the poster. By making it almost painting-like, it brought a certain softness to the poster that worked very well with the rest of Joris' campaign.
